The present invention is directed to a method of reducing the occurrence of neuronal cell damage, including death, caused by transient cerebral hypoxia and/or ischemia. The method comprises the steps of: diagnosing a subject having a transient cerebral hypoxic and/or ischemic condition; and within 16 hours after onset of the condition, administering to the subject a neuroprotective amount of a pharmaceutical agent. The pharmaceutical agent is preferably selected from the group consisting of: a central nervous system stimulant (CNSS), monoamine neurotransmitter, monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), tricyclic antidepressant (TCA), or a combination thereof. Preferred agents include amphetamines, methamphetamine, methylphenidate, methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or a combination thereof.

L'invention concerne un procédé consistant à réduire l'occurrence d'un dommage aux cellules neuronales, comprenant la mort, provoqué par une hypoxie et/ou une ischémie cérébrale. Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à : diagnostiquer un sujet ayant une condition hypoxique et/ou ischémique cérébrale transitoire ; administrer au sujet une quantité neuroprotectrice d'un agent pharmaceutique en l'espace de 16 heures après le début de la condition. L'agent pharmaceutique est, de préférence, choisi dans le groupe constitué par : un stimulant du système nerveux central (CNSS), un neurotransmetteur monoamine, un inhibiteur de la monoamine oxydase (MAOI), un antidépresseur tricyclique (TCA) ou une combinaison de ceux-ci. Les agents préférés comprennent les amphétamines, la méthamphétamine, le méthylphénidate, la méthylènedioxyméthamphétamine ou une combinaison de ceux-ci.
