Abstract This disclosure relates to a method of reducing the number of viable microorganisms by contacting the microorganisms with the surface of a substrate which has been altered by contacting a substrate which develops a negative charge in water with a substance that ionizes in water to form cations and anions, which cations adsorb to the substrate by a process of ion exchange whereby protons are replaced by the cations of the ionizing substance. The altered substrate surfaces can include hospital sheeting, clothing and a wide variety of surfaces which come into contact with microorganisms.
