ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a method of reducing the Na content in a bath of liquid aluminum, either alloyed or not alloyed, in particular a magnesium-alloyed aluminum, by using a melt-treatment in a vacuum furnace known per se characterized in that at least during part of the furation of the vacuum treatment there is brought to reaction in the vacuum furnace a halogen or halogen compound which has a greater affinity to sodium than aluminum and/or its alloying elements.
