Abstract of the Disclosure Methods for treating steam containing impurities generated during the refining of fibrous materials are disclosed, including washing the steam with water, neutralizing acids contained in the steam, and reducing the oxygen content of inert gases contained in the steam to thereby produce (a) steam which is substantially free of impurities, and (b) wash water which contains a substantial portion of those impurities. Preferably the washing, neutralizing and reducing steps are carried out in a single purification device, such as a bubble tray column or a cyclone scrubber.
