ABSTRACT A method for repairing turbine vanes and the like which have become worn or cracked after extended periods of use. The method involves refurbishing a metal alloy turbine part having a composition containing substantial quantities of cobalt, with silicon present in an amount essentially on the order of not more than several percent, and embraces the steps of mixing a preparation of an overlay metal alloy com- prising substantially the same respective amount of cobalt as contained in the turbine part and with silicon present in said alloy, in an amount essentially on the order of not more than several percent. An amount of silicon on the order of substantially 10% to 15% of the original silicon content of the preparation is added to the latter, and the mixture of the preparation and added silicon is converted into a molten alloy and applied to the eroded surfaces of the airfoil of the part to build up the same beyond its original surface, after which the part is sintered in a furnace at a temper- ature above 2,000°F. During the said application, substan- tially all of the added silicon contained in the molten alloy mixture that was applied to the part is burned off, such that the resultant overlay alloy has substantially the same com- position as the turbine part. Following removal of the part and cooling, the overlay surface of the airfoil of the part is ground down to restore the dimensions thereof substanti- ally to those of a new part. The advantage of this method over prior procedures for repairing turbine parts is that a complete restoration is possible, such that the repaired units can meet the rigid specifications and requirements set forth for new components of this type, all at a greatly reduced cost.
