ABSTRACT Used foundry sand is reclaimed by subjecting it to both mechanical and thermal treatment whilst recirculating it in a container. The sand is recirculated through a stream of hot gas which raises the surface temperature of the grains sufficiently to destroy the binding properties of residual binder adhering to the grains, and fines produced by abrasion of the sand grains are extracted. Since it is only necessary to heat the sur- faces of the grains during processing, and removal of residues is carried out in the same container, the system is economical both in terms of energy consumption and the apparatus required. The apparatus may be a tilted rotating drum containing a high speed energizing rotor, and a burner or hot gas source producing a gas stream impinging upon the sand grains being circulated by the rotor.
