Osmo-adjusting solutes, particularly polyols and/or monosaccharides, are used to control the growth of plants. In particular, aqueous solutions of sorbitol or xylitol are used to reduce plant height and increase stem diameter. The solutions preferably include between about 0.05 and about 25 weight percent of the osmo-adjusting solute, and are applied to the root zone by drenching regularly or prior to transplanting. The solutions are also shown to be effective for conditioning plants for hardiness against certain environmental and handling stresses.

On utilise des solutés de régulation osmotique, en particulier, des polyols et/ou des monosaccharides, afin de réguler la croissance de plantes. On utilise, en particulier des solutions aqueuses de sorbitol ou de xylitol, afin de limiter la hauteur de la plante et d'augmenter le diamètre de la tige. Ces solutions comprennent, de préférence, entre 0,05 et 25 % en poids du soluté de régulation osmotique et s'appliquent à la zone des racines par arrosage régulier ou avant la transplantation. Ces solutions présentent également une efficacité de traitement des plantes, afin qu'elles résistent à certaines contraintes dues à l'environnement et à leur manipulation.
