A chloride solution containing not more than 130 g/? of nickel ions, 0.05 to 0.2 g/? of divalent iron ions and cobalt ions is prepared. The solution is brought into reaction with not less than 1 equivalent of chlorine with respect to the total amount of iron ions and cabalt ions contained in the solution, thereby removing cobalt from the chloride solution.
