ABSTRACT A method of removing mercury from the exhaust gases of a waste incinerator. The method is applied to a gas- liquid contact-type smoke cleaner so that the exhaust gases emitted from the waste incinerator are washed with a washing liquid to which an oxidizing agent is added so as to attain an oxidation-reduction potential or COD value such that mercury existing in the form of mercuric chloride and mercury forming complex ions with chlorine in the washing liquid are not reduced by reducing substances present in the washing liquid.
