The present invention provides a method of decomposing and removing halogenated substances contained in gas by contacting waste gas containing around 10 to 10,000 ppm of halogen-containing organic compounds such as carbon tetra- chloride with acid zeolite or acid zeolite ion-exchanged with metals belonging to the second through the sixth period in the periodic table or carrying these metals. The method allows to decompose and remove the organic halogenated substances even at relatively low temperature of 100 to 400 °C and the organic halogenated substances containing no hydrogen can also be treated by this method.
