Abstract of the Disclosure The surfaces of metal workpieces being welded are fused while feeding the workpieces towards each other at a constant speed, and the feeding speed is before the upsetting increased to a final value for a period of (1.0 to 4-0) Image where .DELTA.max is the maximum gap between the workpiece surfaces being welded and v1 is the average workpiece feeding speed over the period of its increase. Empirical formulas are presented to determine the maximum gap for workpieces of various thicknesses. The period of feeding the workpieces at the final feeding speed, determined as described above, allows welding workpieces of more than 5 mm in thickness with relative large areas of the surfaces being joined. The method of the invention is useful in constructing pipelines, weld-joining off-size blanks in rolling, and manufacturing various metal structures from rolled products.
