ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A reversible method is described of making an organic polymer which is substantially insoluble in a polar solvent soluble or easily dispersible therein. The method comprises reacting such a polymer containing at least one Lewis basic or acidic group with a lower alkylene oxide to alkoxylate the Lewis acidic or basic group, dissolving or dispersing the resulting alkoxylated product in a polar solvent, forming the resulting product in a desired form and subjecting the latter to hydrolysis to revert to the original polymer in the desired form. The organic polymers of this invention may be formed into thin self-supporting films or be used to impregnate porous materials to form diaphragms for use in electrolysis cells.
