ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The method of refining steel by submerging in molten steel a con- sumable solid body lighter than steel of a pressed-together mixture of an active scavenging material which has a limited solubility in the steel and an inactive material. The composition and shape of the solid body providing a means by which the scavenging material can be added to the molten steel at a rate that does not allow the scavenging material to exceed its solubility limit in the steel and thus prevent any active scavenging material from reaching the surface of the steel to react with the air to cause pollution.
