Abstract of the Disclosure The invention is directed to a method for closing and sealing a ceramic container for the long-term storage of irradiated nuclear reactor fuel elements or other radioactive materials. The container includes a vessel having an opening of one end thereof, and a cover adapted to fit on the vessel to close the opening. To tightly seal and close the container with respect to the ambient, the vessel and cover are joined by metal solder. A good connection between the vessel and cover is achieved. A container that can be tightly sealed and closed with respect to the ambient by the methods of the invention is also disclosed. -10-
