Abstract of the Disclosure The present invention relates to a method of sensing in advance the suitability of a planting point when plants are planted by means of a planting machine. A sensing means is pressed into or against the ground and is simultaneously vibrated. The resistance caused by the soil on said sensing means causes a change in the vibration and this change is measured and compared with predeter- mined reference valves representing acceptable planting ground conditions. In this way it is possible to get an indication of the suitability of the soil for the planting of plants at each planting point depending on the result of said comparison. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a sensing means displaceable between a lowered ground contacting position and a raised position, a vibrator for vibrating said sensing means and a measurement indicator for indicating the change in the vibration of the sensing means caused by the soil (Figure 1).
