Abstract of the Disclosure Bituminous sands are intimately contacted with an aqueous medium containing a catalytically effective amount of a novel catalyst to separate the bitumin at temperatures below the decomposition point of valuable hydrocarbons contained therein. Usually the temperatures of separation are not higher than 100°C and preferably are about 40-90°C. The catalyst has the unique property of enabling the aqueous medium to penetrate the bituminous sands and, in a manner not fully understood at the present time, rapidly break the bonds between the bitumin and the sand particles and alter the surface properties and/or characteristics thereof whereby the bitumin and sand particles may be easily separated. The separated bitumin fraction floats to the surface of the aqueous medium and may be removed therefrom by scimming, decanting, floating off, or other suitable techniques. In instances where bituminous sands are weathered and/or the bitumin is in an oxidized or polymerized form, a more complete separation may be obtained by adding a water insoluble organic solvent having a specific gravity less than that of the aqueous medium. The resulting organic solvent layer dissolves the separated bitumin floating on the aqueous medium and the bitumin solution may be separated and distilled to recover the bitumin content. Valuable organic acids such as humic acids and asphaltic acids may be recovered from the used aqueous medium by precipitating with an inorganic acid and recovering the precipitated acids by filtration. The catalyst used in practicing the present invention may be prepared by steps including admixing a water soluble alkali metal silicate with an aqueous medium containing carefully controlled amounts of dissolved water soluble substances which are sources of calcium ion and magnesium ion, reacting the same to produce an aqueous colloidal suspension of the reaction product, admixing a micelle-forming surfactant with the aqueous medium, and agitating the aqueous medium containing the colloidal particles and surfactant to form catalyst containing micelles. - 2 -
