ABSTRACT A method is disclosed for separating off acids or bases carried along with the vapours formed by distillation during concentration of acids and bases. The vapours are passed at their existing pressure and temperature through a salt solution which boils at this temperature and pressure. If acids are to be removed from the vapours, the salt solution contains a salt with an anion corresponding to that of the acid and an amount of a base having the same cation as the salt is added to neutralize the acid. If bases are to be re- moved, the salt solution contains a salt with a cation corresponding to that of the base and an amount of the acid required to neutralize the base in the distillation vapours is supplied to the salt solution, the anion of the acid corresponding to that of the salt. The salt formed during neutralization thus corresponds to that of the salt solution.
