ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mixture of particles of different magnetic suscept- ibilities suspended in a fluid is subjected to a magnetic field of an intensity such that, and for a time interval such that, some of the particles are causes by the resultant magnetic forces between the particles to come together to form free agglomerates within the volume of the fluid. The resultant fluid containing particles and agglomerates is then passed through a fluid-permeable mass of magnetisable material whilst the magnetisable material is subjected to a magnetic field to separate the agglomerates from the fluid. Apparatus for per- forming such a process comprises a first magnet for applying the magnetic field to cause agglomeration, an antechamber within which the particles are agglomerated, a separating chamber containing the mass of magnetisable material, a second magnet for applying the magnetic field to separate the agglomerates from the fluid and means for removing from the magnetisable material agglomerates retained therein.
