A method for separating a predetermined wave propagation mode from signals generated by an acoustic array well logging tool is disclosed. Receiver signals from the tool are digitized and converted to a 2-dimensional (2-D) array. The 2-D array is converted to an (f,k) array by a 2-D Fourier transform. The (f,k) array is velocity bandpass filtered to separate the predetermined propagation mode. The filtered (f,k) array is converted back to the time-position domain by applying an inverse 2-D Fourier transform. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the filtered time-domain data are semblance correlated to determine an acoustic velocity in the predetermined propagation mode in an earth formation.
