A method of contour sharpening selected image objects in a determined area of a digitized colour or grey value starting image in an image processing unit is described which includes the following steps: generation of a first binary image (31) only including the selected image objects (301) and in which the image objects are black and everything else is white; generation of a second binary image (33) which only includes the outer contours of the image objects; decomposition of the outer contours into segments of defined geometric curve shapes by determination of significant points on the outer contours and correlation of these points with determined geometric curve shapes; generation of a binary image of the outer contours (36) of the image objects, the resolution of the contours corresponding to the matrix which is available, by joining the geometric curve shapes correlated with the significant points; generation of a colour or grey value image (37) by filling the outer contours with a determined colour or grey value; and generation of a superimposed final image by inserting the colour or grey value image, which has been produced by filling the outer contour, into the starting image.
