ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of smoothing the surface of a web, such as felt or a wire made of thermoplastic fibers or filaments intended to be used in paper manufacturing. The web is passed through the press nip of a pair of press rolls comprising a press roll and heating roll. The web is subjected in said press nip simultaneously to a heating and pressure action for softening and compressing the web surface facing the paper in order to smoothen said surface.
