A B S T R A C T The present invention relates to a process for preventing fusion of thermoplastic fibres, preferably consisting of paraffin and polyethylene, which are intended for absorbing hydrophobic liquids, preferably petro-chemical liquid products, the thermoplastic fibres being formed by passing heated thermoplastic material in a melted condition through at least one rotating spinning means and gathering the material at one side thereof during solidification to fiber form. To effectively prevent the fusion of the fibres and the resulting deteriorated absorbing ability in a simple way, the process is characterized in that a cooling medium is caused to flow between the solidifying thermoplastic fibres via at least one orifice in the spinning means and/or its bearing means.
