ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of joining elements by explosion-welding comprising the steps of placing a charge within a mass of inert material eccentrically thereof, whereby to provide a wall of inert material of lesser thickness adjacent one outer portion of the charge as compared to adjacent the remaining outer portions of the charge; and placing the charge and mass of inert material in the vicinity of where the joint of the elements is to be made, in readiness for effectively explosion-welding the joint, including orientating the mass of inert material relative thereto such that the wall of lesser thickness faces where the joint of the elements is to be made. The invention provides to considerably limit the quantity of charge required, especially by giving it cylindrical shape and enclosing it in an inert medium serving as blasting medium and medium for transmitting shock waves. This particular shape eliminates the dependence on detonation speed and high-precision explosive charges can be selected, which can be detonated at small cross-sections. The cylindrical shape of the splicing material also increases the tolerance limits for irregularity of the metal elements. In a further aspect there is provided a charge device for use in explosion- welding elements together comprising; a mass of inert material having an outer peripheral surface and an explosive charge in the material and surrounded thereby, the charge being positioned eccentrically of the mass whereby to provide a thin- ner wall of inert material on one side thereof to that of an opposite side thereof. The invention also permits splicing from both sides of the elements to be joined, thus eliminating the need for supports to prevent deformation.
