ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of stabilizing the viscosity and increasing the concentration of an aqueous magnesia slurry in which the magnesia has a citric acid activity less than 200 seconds. Magnesia concentrations of 0.1 to 0.24 grams magnesia per cubic centimeter of slurry can be stabilized by addition of 0.5% to 25% by weight of a decomposable phosphate-containing compound, calculated as P2O5, based on the dry weight of magnesia. Preferred phosphate compounds include monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, water soluble ammonium polyphosphate, dibasic calcium phosphate, and tribasic calcium phosphate.
