The invention relates to a method of storing solar energy. To this end, a quantity of photosynthetically produced biomass such as wood is converted to charcoal and a substantial partial quantity of the charcoal is permanently stored. The remaining quantity is converted to energy or an energy carrier such as hydrogen. The major quantity of the charcoal remains stored for the purpose of a lasting energy supply by reversion of the combustion process but may be taken recourse to at any time for producing energy or an energy carrier such as hydrogen.
