A method of making a self-sharpening cutting blade from a blank comprises the steps of identifying a leading edge, designating a targeted portion of the rear surface, and quickly heating the targeted portion including the leading edge. In addition, a cutting blade has selectively hardened surfaces, allowing the blade to maintain its sharpness by promoting deterioration of underlying material rather than of the leading edge.

Cette invention concerne la fabrication de lames de couteau auto-affûtantes à partir d'une ébauche dont il faut d'abord repérer le côté à affûter et délimiter une portion de la surface arrière avant de chauffer rapidement ladite portion ainsi que le côté à affûter. La lame obtenue selon la méthode objet de l'invention présente des zones à durcissement variable favorisant l'auto-affûtage par dégradation préférentielle du matériau sous-jacent et non du fil de la lame.
