A coating of blue-black or black oxidized zirconium of uniform and controlled thickness on a zirconium or zirconium alloy material is accomplished through the oxidative treatment of an amorphous zirconium or zirconium alloy substrate having an altered surface roughness. An oxidized zirconium coating of uniform and controlled thickness is especially useful on orthopedic implants of zirconium or zirconium-based alloys to provide low friction, highly wear resistant surfaces on artificial joints, such as, but not limited to, hip joints, knee joints, shoulders, elbows, and spinal implants. The uniformly thick oxidized zirconium surface of controlled depth on prostheses provide a barrier against implant corrosion caused by ionization of the metal prostheses. The invention is also useful in non-articulating implant devices such as bone plates, bone screws, etc.

L'invention porte sur l'application d'un revêtement de zirconium oxydé bleu-noir ou noir, d'une épaisseur uniforme et régulière, sur un matériau en zirconium ou en alliage de zirconium, ce revêtement étant obtenu par traitement oxydatif d'un substrat en zirconium ou en alliage amorphe de zirconium dont la rugosité de surface a changé. Un revêtement en zirconium oxydé, d'une épaisseur uniforme et régulière, est notamment utile sur des implants orthopédiques de zirconium ou d'alliage à base de zirconium pour former des surfaces extrêmement résistantes à l'usure, à faible friction, sur des articulations artificielles telles que, mais pas exclusivement, les articulations de la hanche, les articulations du genou, des épaules, des coudes et des implants pour la colonne vertébrale. La surface en zirconium oxydé, d'épaisseur régulière, de profondeur déterminée, des prothèses, forme une barrière à la corrosion des implants provoquée par l'ionisation des prothèses métalliques. L'invention est également utile dans des implants non articulés tels que des plaques vissées, des vis, etc.
