A method of making an active material comprises the steps of forming a slurry, spray drying the slurry to form a powdered precursor compositions, and heating the powdered precursor composition at a temperature and for a time sufficient to form a reaction product. The slurry has a liquid phase and a solid phase, and contains at least an alkali metal compound and a transition metal compound. Preferably the liquid phase contains dissolved alkali metal compound, and the solid phase contains an insoluble transition metal compound, an insoluble carbonaceous material compound, or both. Electrodes and batteries are provided that contain the active materials.

L'invention concerne un procédé de production d'un matériau actif comprenant les étapes consistant à : former une bouillie ; sécher cette bouillie par pulvérisation pour former une composition de précurseurs en poudre ; et à chauffer cette composition de précurseurs en poudre à une certaine température et pendant une durée suffisante pour former un produit réactionnel. Ladite bouillie comporte une phase liquide ainsi qu'une phase solide et contient au moins un composé métal alcalin ainsi qu'un composé métal de transition. De préférence, ladite phase liquide contient un composé métal alcalin dissous tandis que la phase solide comprend un composé métal de transition insoluble, une matière carbonée ou les deux. La présente invention se rapporte en outre à des électrodes et à des piles qui contiennent ces matériaux actifs.
