Abstract of the Disclosure A method is disclosed of synthesizing esters by reacting a carboxylic acid with an alcohol, an ester with a carboxylic acid, or an ester with an alcohol. The method is characterized by the use of a solid partially dehydrated metal hydroxide of a metal belonging to Group III or IV of the Periodic Table as a heterogeneous catalyst. The method can be conducted in gaseous phase or in liquid phase.
