ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: An improved method of tanning hides which comprises treating the hides, before or after chrome or vegetable tanning thereof, with a basic aluminum polychloride having the general formula: Image wherein m is a value from 1.1 to 2.1, n is a value from 0.12 to 0.18, and the basicity of the aluminum polychloride is in the range of 37% to 70%. The skins treated in accordance with the invention have a better filling, fuller flanks closer grain and a more cohesive structure and show good dyeing characteristics.
