9164 ABSTRACT An optical fibre is terminated by securing the fibre with adhesive in a ferrule having a radially deformable end portion with a portion of the optical core from which the cladding has been removed protruding out from the end portion and press fitting a rigid alignment socket having a concentric bore in a transverse end wall onto the end portion of the ferrule with the core received in the bore so that the core is concentric with the periphery of the end portion. The exposed portion of the core is removed after the adhesive has set together with the alignment socket and the ferrule end portion press fitted into a suitable bush also receiving a similarly terminated fibre.
