A method of thermally transferring printing onto a metal substrate surface and an article such as a cigarette lighter containing such printing. A white coating followed by a transparent coating are applied to the substrate surface, and printing is thermally transferred from a transfer media onto the substrate surface. The coatings are preferably electrostatically applied.
