METHOD OF TRANSMITTING INFORMATION AND MULTIPLEXING DEVICE FOR EXECUTING THE METHOD Abstract A method for transmitting information from different sources over a common transmission medium is described. Data from a first set of sources is transmitted as circuit - switched traffic in periodic time slots of sequential time frames. The time slots are temporarily assigned to the sources and the size and position of any time slot within a frame cycle is determined by its respective assignment. Data from a second set of sources is intermediately stored in a buffer store as store-and-forward traffic. The data stored in the buffer store is sequentially extracted from the store and transmitted in the data stream in gaps left in the time frame between time slots in the circuit-switched traffic. A new time slot is assigned to one of the first set of sources only if the remaining channel capacity available to the store-and-forward traffic will not be less than a fixed minimum value. - 1 -
