ABSTRACT A method for the delivery of diagnostic or therapeutic agents across the blood-brain barrier is disclosed. The method comprises: (a) encapsulation of the therapeutic or diagnostic agent to be delivered in a liposome; (b) targeting the liposome by attachment to its external surface of either (i) a molecule which is actively transported across the blood-brain barrier; or (ii) antibodies to the specific brain endothelial cell receptors for molecules which are actively transported across the blood-brain barrier; (c) administering to a mammal of the targeted liposomes containing the diagnostic or therapeutic agent to be delivered.
