Methods for the treatment and prevention of APP processing disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Down's Syndrome which are based on the administration of an effective amount of a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor to a mammal are disclosed. Additionally, methods for treatment and prevention of APP processing disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Down's Syndrome which are based on the reduction of cellular cholesterol in a mammal are disclosed. These methods reduce the amount of AB peptides or decrease the formation of AB peptides or increase the clearance of AB peptides in a mammal suffering from Alzheimer's disease and Down's Syndrome. Figure (1) is a schematic which illustrates APP processing.
L'invention concerne des méthodes de traitement et de prévention de troubles de la maturation de l'APP tels que la maladie d'Alzheimer et le syndrome de Down, consistant à administrer à un mammifère une quantité efficace d'un inhibiteur de la HMG-CoA réductase. Cette invention concerne également des méthodes de traitement et de prévention de troubles de la maturation de l'APP tels que la maladie d'Alzheimer et le syndrome de Down, fondées sur la réduction du cholestérol cellulaire chez un mammifère. Ces méthodes réduisent la quantité de A.beta. peptides ou ralentissent la formation de A.beta. ou augmentent la libération de A.beta. peptides chez un mammifère souffrant de la maladie d'Alzheimer ou du syndrome de Down.
