A method and preparation for the stimulation of tear secretion in a subject in need of such treatment is disclosed. The method comprises administering to the ocular surfaces of the subject a purinergic receptor agonist such as uridine 5'-triphosphate [UTP], dinucleotides, cytidine 5'-triphosphate [CTP], adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP], or their therapeutically useful analogs and derivatives, in an amount effective to stimulate tear fluid secretion and enhance drainage of the lacrimal system. Pharmaceutical formulations and methods of making the same are also disclosed. Methods of administering the same would include: topical administration via a liquid, gel, cream, or as part of a contact lens or selective release membrane; or systemic administration via nasal drops or spray, inhalation by nebulizer or other device, oral form (liquid or pill), injectable, intra-operative instillation or suppository form.

L'invention concerne un procédé et une préparation destinés à stimuler la sécrétion lacrymale chez un sujet nécessitant un tel traitement. Ce procédé consiste à administrer aux surfaces oculaires dudit sujet un agoniste récepteur purinergique tel que l'uridine 5'-triphosphate(UTP), des dinucléotides, la cytidine 5'-triphosphate (CTP), l'adénosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), ou leurs analogues et dérivés thérapeutiquement utiles, en dose efficace pour stimuler la sécrétion lacrymale et pour favoriser l'écoulement dans le système lacrymal. L'invention concerne également des formulations pharmaceutiques ainsi que leurs procédés de production. Les méthodes d'administration de ces formulations consistent en une administration topique desdites formulations par l'intermédiaire d'un liquide, d'un gel, d'une crème, d'une lentille de contact, ou d'une membrane à libération sélective, ou en une administration systémique par l'intermédiaire d'un spray nasal ou de gouttes nasales, d'une inhalation par nébuliseur ou tout autre dispositif, par voie orale (liquide ou pilule), par injection, par instillation peropératoire, ou sous forme de suppositoire.
