ABSTRACT A method of fluorinating a surface of an extensible article by excluding from the surface extraneous oxidizing agents, extending the surface, and fluorinating the ex- tended surface with a gas mixture containing fluorine and an inert gas selected from the group consisting of nitro- gen, argon and helium. The thusly fluorinated surface exhibits desirable physical and chemical properties. The method is particularly advantageous for fluorinating surgeon's gloves.
