The present invention relates to a method of the type- specific detection of herpes simplex virus, characterized by comprising the step of DNA amplification in a liquid mixture containing either of a combination of a first DNA primer containing an oligonucleotide having at least 15 bases in a base sequence of the formula (1a) CACGGGTATA AGGACATCCA (1a) with a second DNA primer containing an oligonucleotide having at least 15 bases in a base sequence of the formula (2a): GGGTCCTCGT CCAGATCGCT (2a), or a combination of a first DNA primer containing an oligonucleotide having at least 15 bases in a base sequence of the formula (1b): GCCTCTTTTC CCCCGGGGAG (1b) with a second DNA primer containing an oligonucleotide having at least 15 bases in a base sequence of the formula (2b): GGGAAAAAAG CCGCGCCGGGG (2b), a DNA polymerase and an aqueous liquid sample; and then the step of DNA examination on the resultant reaction solution. According to the present invention, it is possible to differentiate infectious disease caused by the HSV I or HSV II, accurately and rapidly in a type specific manner.
