ABSTRACT An improved method of upgrading titaniferous ores, especially ilmenite, utilising reductive roasting. The ore is reduced in the presence of a chlorine-containing compound and sulphur or a sulphur-containing compound to produce metallic iron and titanium dioxide and the iron is subsequently removed by leaching.
