In order to prevent conception and/or infection by sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) one or more lectins capable of binding sperm or agglutinable components of male ejaculate and/or the pathogenic microorganisms responsible for STDs or the carbohydrate moieties expressed on cell surfaces by which the microorganisms bind to the cells, are administered to the vagina prior to sexual intercourse. The lectins prevent conception by binding to the sperm or agglutinable components of male ejaculate to render the sperm incapable of fertilization. They also bind to the pathogenic microorganisms to render them non-pathogenic or to carbohydrates expressed on cell surfaces to prevent infection by the microorganisms or treat such infections. Lectins can also be administered to treat sexually transmitted vaginal infections. The lectins can also be applied to or contained within a condom. The condom may carry the lectins either within the hollow interior or the condom or impregnated into, linked to, or coated upon its membrane body. Lectins may also be incorporated in the same way into a surgical glove for protection against infection by pathogenic microorganisms.
La présente invention a trait à la contraception et/ou à la protection contre une infection par maladie sexuellement transmissible (MST). A cette fin, une ou plusieurs lectines, qui peuvent se lier au sperme ou à des composants pouvant s'agglutiner de l'éjaculat de l'homme et/ou aux micro-organismes pathogènes responsables des MST ou aux groupes glucidiques exprimés sur des surfaces cellulaires par l'intermédiaire desquelles lesdits micro-organismes se lient aux cellules, sont administrées dans le vagin, avant un rapport sexuel. Les lectines empêchent la conception en ce qu'elles se lient au sperme ou à des composants pouvant s'agglutiner de l'éjaculat de l'homme, rendant le sperme inapte à la fécondation. Elles se lient également aux micro-organismes pathogènes, afin de les rendre non pathogènes, ou aux glucides exprimés sur des surfaces cellulaires, afin d'empêcher une infection par les micro-organismes ou de traiter de telles infections. Les lectines peuvent aussi être administrées afin de traiter des infections vaginales sexuellement transmissibles. Ces lectines peuvent également être appliquées sur un préservatif ou être contenues dans un préservatif. Les lectines peuvent se trouver dans l'espace intérieur creux de ce préservatif, imprégner son corps membraneux, être liées à son corps membraneux ou être revêtues sur ce corps membraneux. En outre, des lectines peuvent être incorporées, de la même façon, à un gant chirurgical servant de protection contre des infections par micro-organismes pathogènes.
