A method, system and computer software product for improving rate-distortion performance while remaining faithful to JPEG/MPEG syntax, involving joint optimization of Huffman tables, quantization step sizes and quantized coefficients of a JPEG/MPEG encoder. This involves finding the optimal coefficient indices in the form of (run, size) pairs. By employing an interative process including this search for optimal coefficient indices, joint improvement of run-length coding, Huffman coding and quantization table selection may be achieved. Additionally, the compression of quantized DC coefficients may also be improved using a trellis-structure.
L'invention concerne un procédé, un système et un produit-programme d'ordinateur pouvant améliorer le rendement débit-distorsion tout en restant fidèle à la syntaxe JPEG/MPEG, et comprenant l'optimisation conjointe des tables de Huffman, la longueur de pas de quantification et les coefficients quantifiés d'un codeur JPEG/MPEG. Le procédé consiste à trouver les indices de coefficients optimaux sous forme de paires (plage, longueur). La mise en oeuvre d'un processus interactif comprenant cette recherche d'indices de coefficients optimaux permet de réaliser une amélioration conjointe d'un codage par longueur de plage, un codage de Huffman et une sélection de tables de quantification. De plus, la compression de coefficients DC quantifiés peut également être améliorée au moyen d'une structure de codage en treillis.
