A composite part consisting of a metallic matrix and reinforcing fibres is fabricated by the simultaneous winding of the fibre and plasma spraying of the matrix onto a rotating mandrel, wherein an axi-symmetric part is produced with multiple layers of the fibres aligned in the circumferential direction. Single or multiple fibre strands are wound onto a mandrel and simultaneously sprayed with the heated powder matrix material using a thermal spray process. Rotation and translation of the mandrel produces an axi-symmetric composite part. The content of the fibre material in the plasma sprayed matrix is typically up to 40% by volume. The light-weight composite part is produced in a single processing step. The part may be used either directly, or as an insert in other components with or without further densification.
Pièce de matériau composite comportant une matrice métallique et des fibres de renforcement, fabriquée en deux étapes réalisées simultanément, soit l'enroulement des fibres et la projection par plasma de la matrice sur un mandrin rotatif. Une pièce axisymétrique ainsi produite comporte plusieurs couches de fibres alignées dans le sens de la circonférence. Un ou plusieurs torons de fibres sont tournés sur un mandrin et sont simultanément vaporisés du matériau à matrice en poudre chauffé par procédé thermique. La rotation et la translation du mandrin permettent de produire une pièce de composite axisymétrique. Le contenu en fibres de la matrice projetée par plasma représente généralement jusqu'à 40 % en volume. La fabrication de la pièce de composite légère comporte un seul procédé, et cette pièce peut être utilisée directement ou peut être insérée dans d'autres composants après avoir subi ou non une densification ultérieure.
