A non-destructive method for quantifying the hydrogen content or a hydrogen- bearing constituent in a material is disclosed. The method is based on the principle of moderating neutron spectroscopy which is particularly suited for analyzing materials containing the high scattering/capture cross-section element of hydrogen. The method comprises the steps of exposing a neutron moderator to a beam of radiation comprising neutrons and measuring thermal neutron intensities at a plurality of locations in the moderator. These measured intensities reflect the energy distribution of the beam of radiation incident upon the moderator. Thus, by measuring these intensities with the material present, and comparing these intensities to a model, to those of a composition standard(s), or combinations thereof, the hydrogen content of the material is quantified. Furthermore, the hydrogen-bearing constituent of the material is quantified by knowing or estimating the chemical or molecular structure of the material.

L'invention concerne une méthode non destructive destinée à la quantification du contenu en hydrogène ou d'un constituant renfermant de l'hydrogène d'un matériau. Cette méthode repose sur le principe de la spectroscopie par modération de neutrons, principe particulièrement adapté pour l'analyse de matériaux contenant l'élément à section efficace de diffusion/capture élevée hydrogène. Cette méthode consiste à exposer un modérateur de neutrons à un faisceau de rayonnement comprenant des neutrons et à mesurer les intensités des neutrons thermiques dans une pluralité d'emplacements dans le modérateur. Ces intensités mesurées permettent de déterminer la distribution énergétique du faisceau de rayonnement incident sur le modérateur. Ainsi, on peut quantifier le contenu en hydrogène du matériau en mesurant ces intensités dans le matériau présent et en comparant ces intensités à un modèle, à celles des normes d'une composition, ou à une combinaison de ces derniers. De plus, le constituant renfermant de l'hydrogène du matériau est quantifié sur la base de la structure chimique ou moléculaire connue ou estimée du matériau.
