ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Uncarbonized fuel agglomerates comprising a mixture of coking coal, or a mixture of fine coal, char, and non-coking agglomerates are fed into a countercurrent vessel such as a shaft furnace into which a stream of cool CO2 rich gas is injected which does not react with the agglomerates being discharged and thus provides a final cooling stage fiO that the fuel products can be handled without significant reoxidation; the initial reaction of CO2 with fuel carbon provides the heat for temperature induration and also removes much of the excess reactivity in the product.
