This invention mainly consists of a conventional tank water heater with an additional heat exchanger installed at the bottom of the tank that receives pre-warm water from it. This heat exchanger receives heat from either the same tank water heater burner or an additional dedicated burner. In case of using two burners, the exhaust flow path is the same and the additional heat exchanger creates an additional heating surface area that increases overall thermal efficiency of the system. This extra heat exchanger behaves as a tankless water heater in series with the tank water heater. Therefore, the water from the tank receives additional energy (and temperature) as it crosses the additional heat exchanger. This idea incorporates the advantages of both tank and tankless water heaters and allows existing water tank owners to install a much better water heating system that can provide both large amounts of hot water initially followed by a endless limited supply of hot water, similar to tankless systems. Another advantage of the system is that it increases overall efficiency of tank water heaters with the addition of extra heat exchanger surface. Additionally, it allows lowering the water heater tank average temperature, which reduces heat losses associated with the hot water stored in the tank for long periods of time. The tankless system needs heat modulation through the additional burner power output or through a deflector valve that can divert the exhaust gases of a only conventional burner between the additional heat exchanger and the water tank. The combined heater system provides endless supply of a fixed amount of water even when the water tank temperature has dropped to a certain minimum level, too low for comfort. When the additional burner is operating it heats both the water inside the tank and the water that flows inside the additional heat exchanger. An additional feature is the addition of a central tube concentric to the exhaust tube that increases the heat transfer surface area of the tank water heater that can increase overall thermal efficiency of the system.
