The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for the controlled placement of a shear-thinnable polymer composition into a moving web. The controlled placement is preferably performed by applying the polymer composition onto a surface of a moving web, shear-thinning the composition and placing it into the web and curing the polymer composition. A preferred apparatus includes one or more process heads (310) that has mounted thereto a rigid knife blade (311) for engagement with the moving web (302). The knife blade (311) is movable vertically and rotationally. The process heads (310) are also movable horizontally along the path of the moving web (302). A plurality of macro and micro tension zones (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11) are established and are monitored for controlling the apparatus and process. Additional measurements of web density, micro porosity, placement of an internal layer of polymer within the web, analysis of elements on the treated web, and the size of the polymer bead applied to the moving web are measured for controlling online the apparatus and the process of this invention. This method and apparatus produces webs that either has some of its structural elements encapsulated by the polymer composition while at least some of the interstitial spaces of the web are open; or has an internal layer extending through the web in a direction generally spaced from at least one major surface thereof; or has both encapsulated structural elements and an internal layer of polymer composition.
La présente invention concerne des techniques de placement contrôlé d'une composition polymère fluidifiable dans une bande continue en défilement ainsi que l'appareil correspondant. Le procédé préféré de placement contrôlé consiste à appliquer la composition polymère sur une surface d'une bande continue en défilement, à fluidifier cette composition, à la placer dans la bande continue et à durcir la composition polymère. L'appareil convenant le mieux pour ce procédé comprend une ou plusieurs têtes d'usinage sur lesquelles est monté une lame de couteau rigide. La lame de couteau est à mouvement vertical et rotatif. La tête d'usinage peut aussi se mouvoir dans le sens horizontal le long du trajet de la bande continue en défilement. Une série de zones de macrotension et de microtension sont créées et surveillées aux fins du réglage de l'appareil et de la régulation du procédé; aux fins de mesures supplémentaires de la densité et de la microporosité de la bande, aux fins aussi de l'insertion dans celle-ci d'une couche interne de polymère, et de l'analyse des éléments sur la bande continue traitée; la taille des particules polymères appliquées à la bande continue en défilement est mesurée aux fins du réglage de l'appareil et de la régulation du procédé. Les bandes produites selon cette technique et avec cet appareil comportent des éléments structurels enrobés dans la composition polymère, certains espaces interstitiels au moins étant ajourés; ou bien ces bandes ont une couche interne s'étendant sur une distance correspondant généralement à au moins une grande surface; ou bien elles contiennent des éléments structurels enrobés et une couche interne de composition polymère.
