A self-propelled core-cutting apparatus is used to cut circular slots in pavement extending about manhole castings and the like to permit castings and surrounding cores of pavement to be removed quickly and easily for such purposes as elevating the level of manhole castings to align with new pavement. The appa- ratus has a transport carriage to which are connected 1) a large diameter, generally cylindrical core-cutting bit, 2) power- operated support and drive systems mounting the bit for vertical and rotary movement relative to the carriage along and about a vertically extending center axis, and 3) a power-operated sta- bilization system that makes use of the weight of the apparatus in maintaining desired positioning of the apparatus during cut- ting operations. Support for the core cutting bit is provided by a telescopically extensible array of cage-like structures that extend substantially concentrically about the center axis, inclu- ding an outer cage that is rigidly connected to the carriage, and an inner cage that is movable vertically relative to both the outer cage and the bit. Job site positioning of the apparatus is effected by using lever or joystick controls to operate a fluid- motor-driven power-steerable wheel that also serves as one of three vertically movable components of the power-operated stabi- lization system. Preferred practice of the invention also makes use of other disclosed features.
Machine à carotter automotrice utilisée pour découper des fentes circulaires dans le revêtement entourant les trous d'homme dans les voies de circulation afin de faciliter le dégagement et de surélever les trous d'homme au nouveau niveau du revêtement de la chaussée. La machine comporte un chariot transportant 1) une couronne de carottage de grand diamètre de forme généralement cylindrique; 2) des systèmes de support et d'entraînement motorisé pour assurer les mouvements vertical et rotatif de la couronne de carottage par rapport au chariot de transport; 3) un système de stabilisation mécanique utilisant la masse de la machine pour assurer la stabilité de la machine durant les opérations de carottage. Le support de la couronne de carottage est assuré par une structure télescopique en forme de cages qui surplombe concentriquement l'axe central de la machine, y compris une cage externe en liaison mécanique rigide avec le chariot et une cage interne pouvant être déplacée verticalement par rapport à la cage externe et à la couronne de carottage. Le positionnement de la machine est effectué en actionnant les commandes à levier d'une roue motrice hydraulique à servodirection utilisée aussi par le système de stabilisation mécanique. L'utilisation de l'invention fait appel à d'autres caractéristiques dévoilées.
