Methods and apparatus for detecting air/cladding and core/cladding interfaces of blanks (13) used to produce optical waveguide fibers are provided. A beam of coherent light (30) is scanning across the blank (13) and spatial light intensity patterns produced thereby (Figure 5) are detected and analyzed. Air/cladding interfaces correspond to a decrease in the width of a unimodal spatial light intensity pattern as the beam moves towards the center of the blank (Figures 5A and 5B). Core/cladding interfaces correspond to the onset of an at least bimodal spatial light intensity pattern as the beam moves towards the center of the blank (Figures 5D and 5E). By rotating the blank and repeating the measurement process at two or more angular positions, concentricity and ellipticity values for a blank can be determined.

Méthodes et appareil conçus pour détecter les interfaces air-gaine et coeur-gaine d'ébauches (13) utilisées pour fabriquer des fibres optiques. Un faisceau de lumière cohérente (30) traverse l'ébauche (13) en effectuant un balayage et produit ainsi (Figure 5) des motifs spatiaux d'intensité lumineuse que l'on peut détecter et analyser. Les interfaces air-gaine correspondent à une décroissance de la largeur d'un motif spatial unimodal d'intensité lumineuse lorsque le faisceau est dirigé vers le centre de l'ébauche (Figures 5A et 5B). Les interfaces coeur-gaine, quant à elles, font apparaître un motif spatial d'intensité lumineuse au moins bimodal lorsque le faisceau est dirigé vers le centre de l'ébauche (Figures 5D et 5E). En faisant tourner l'ébauche et en répétant ce procédé de mesure selon deux ou plusieurs angles différents, on détermine les valeurs de concentricité et d'ellipticité de l'ébauche.
