Methods and apparatus for treating an impaired neural function in a brain of a patient. In one embodiment, a method for treating a neural function in a brain of a patient includes determining a therapy period during which a plurality of therapy sessions are to be performed to recover functional ability corresponding to the neural function. The method continues by identifying a stimulation site in or on the brain of the patient associated with the neural function, and positioning an electrode at least proximate to the identified stimulation site. The patient is then treated by providing electrical stimulation treatments to the stimulation site. The treatment can comprise delivering electrical stimulation signals to the electrode during the therapy sessions. After expiration of the therapy period, the method includes preventing electrical stimulation signals from being delivered to the stimulation site.
L'invention concerne des méthodes et un appareil pour traiter une fonction neurale lésée dans le cerveau d'un patient. Dans un mode de réalisation de l'invention, une méthode de traitement d'une fonction neurale d'un cerveau de patient consiste à déterminer une période de thérapie durant laquelle une pluralité de sessions thérapeutiques sont à effectuer pour recouvrer une capacité fonctionnelle correspondant à la fonction neurale. Cette méthode consiste également à identifier un site de stimulation dans le cerveau ou sur le cerveau du patient, associé à cette fonction neurale, et à positionner une électrode au moins à proximité du site de stimulation identifié. Le patient est ensuite traité par des traitements de stimulation électrique, au niveau du site de stimulation. Le traitement peut consister à administrer des signaux de stimulation électrique à l'électrode, lors des sessions thérapeutiques. Une fois la période thérapeutique terminée, la méthode consiste à éviter que des signaux de stimulation électrique ne soient envoyés au site de stimulation.
