A can end is formed from sheet material in a single acting press (100) by blanking a workpiece (W) and holding the workpiece between a blanking punch (120) and a draw pad (128). The periphery of the workpiece is worked between a knockout (116) and a crown ring (130) to contour a crown (C). A bead punch (112) advances into the workpiece to form a shell (S) extending from the crown. The bead punch bottoms out on a bead die (134) and collapses to a predetermined position to form a plurality of beads (B) adjacent the shell by flowing a portion of the shell to form the beads while shortening the shell to less than specifications for the can end. The bead punch returns to an uncollapsed position during upstroke of the press to extend the shell to be within specifications. Apparatus for forming a can end in a press (100) includes a fluidly supported die crown ring (130) having an upper surface defining a can end crown (C) contour. Knockout (116) is aligned with the die crown ring for engaging a workpiece (W) upon downstroke of the press to form a crown in the periphery of the workpiece. A punch (112), mounted to collapse against fluid pressure, forms a shell (S) extending from the crown and presses the workpiece against a bead die (134) to form a plurality of beads (B) adjacent the shell. The punch collapses so that a portion of the shell flows to form the beads and returns to an uncollapsed position during upstroke to extend the shell to meet specifications.
Selon l'invention, l'extrémité d'une boîte est formée à partir de tôle dans une presse à simple effet (100) par découpage d'une pièce (W) et le maintien de ladite pièce entre un poinçon de découpage (120) et un patin à emboutir (128). Le poinçon à bourrelets (112) se pose sur une matrice à bourrelets (134) et descend jusqu'à une position prédéterminée de façon à former une pluralité de bourrelets (B) jouxtant l'enveloppe et soumet une partie de ladite enveloppe à un fluage pour former lesdits bourrelets, l'enveloppe se raccourcissant pour prendre une dimension inférieure à celle spécifiée pour l'extrémité de la boîte. Le poinçon à bourrelets retourne à une position non abaissée durant la course de remontée de la presse de façon à détendre l'enveloppe pour que sa dimension soit dans les limites spécifiées. L'appareil qui permet de former une extrémité de boîte dans une presse (100) comporte une matrice en bague de couronne (130) soutenue fluidiquement qui présente une face supérieure définissant le pourtour d'une couronne (C) d'extrémité de boîte. Un poussoir (116) est aligné avec la matrice en bague de couronne, pour venir en contact avec une pièce (W) lors de la course de descente de la presse et former une couronne dans le pourtour de la pièce. Un poinçon (112) monté de façon à s'abaisser à l'encontre de la pression du fluide, forme une enveloppe (S) partant de la couronne et presse la pièce contre une matrice à bourrelets de façon à former plusieurs bourrelets (B) jouxtant l'enveloppe. Le poinçon s'abaisse de façon qu'une partie de l'enveloppe subisse un fluage pour former les bourrelets et retourne à une position non abaissée pendant la course de remontée, l'enveloppe s'allongeant de manière à satisfaire aux spécifications.
